Dr. Zhiwei Fan (Abe lab) received the 30th Young Investigator Award by the Japanese Society of Sleep Research
Dr. Zhiwei Fan (Abe Lab) was honored with the 30th Young Investigator Award by the Japanese Society of Sleep Research (JSSR) at its 49th Annual Meeting, held in Hiroshima, Japan, on June 28–29, 2025.
Dr. Fan is a postdoctoral researcher at the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (WPI-IIIS), Tsukuba Institute for Advanced Research (TIAR), University of Tsukuba, and an honorary fellow at the Center for Sleep and Consciousness, University of Wisconsin–Madison. The award recognizes his outstanding contribution to the field of sleep research through a pioneering study titled “Binaural beats at 0.25 Hz shorten the latency to slow-wave sleep during daytime naps”.
This groundbreaking study explores the use of low-frequency binaural beats to accelerate the onset of slow-wave sleep (SWS) during daytime naps. By stimulating the brain at 0.25 Hz, the research demonstrates a novel non-invasive approach to promoting deeper and more restorative sleep—offering potential applications in clinical sleep medicine and cognitive recovery.
“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Fan. “This award affirms the value of years of dedicated research and encourages me to further pursue both the theoretical foundations and real-world applications of brain stimulation in sleep science.”
