Dr. Arisa Hirano has been awarded “Tsukuba Encouragement Award (Young Researcher Category).”

Dr. Arisa Hirano, a Principal Investigator / Assistant Professor of International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (WPI-IIIS) has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 Tsukuba Encouragement Award (Young Researcher Category), which is awarded to scientists who carrying out current research in the prefecture (age below 40), and with potential to achieve significant research results.
Dr. Hirano received this prize for her research titled “Research on Elucidating the Mechanism of Circadian Rhythm Disorders and Development of Their Treatment”. She aims to contribute not only to the healthy development of the younger generation but also to significantly extend healthy life expectancy by researching the prevention and development of treatments for “circadian rhythm disorders”, which are strongly related to serious illnesses such as sleep disorders, cancer and depression, caused by disruptions in the alignment between environmental rhythms and internal rhythms.



The 34th 2024 Tsukuba Prize / Tsukuba Encouragement Award Ceremony was held at Epochal Tsukuba International Congress Center on February 26, 2025. Dr. Leo Esaki, President of the Science and Technology Promotion Foundation of Ibaraki as well as Chairman of Tsukuba Science Academy, addressed the recipients with a video message. At the award ceremony, Dr. Maruyama, Vice Chairman of Tsukuba Science Academy, presented her with an honorable certificate and a medal, then Dr. Igarashi, Mayor of Tsukuba, presented her with a catalog of award.
