Ayuka Hirayama ( Abe Laboratory ) received “Student Presentation Award” at “The 33rd Symposium of the 33rd Japanese Society of Sleep and Environments, Okinawa, Japan

Ms. Ayuka Hirayama, a first-year student of Doctoral Program in Neuroscience, received the “Student Presentation Award at the 33rd Japanese Society of Sleep and Environments Symposium, held on September 6 – 7, 2024, at Okinawa.
The title of her presentation was “The Effects of 0.25Hz Binaural Beats (BB) on Nocturnal Sleep and an Analysis of Factors Influencing BB Perception”. The award was given to Ms. Hirayama for her discovery, A 0.25 Hz binaural beat, used as an auditory stimulus, was found to reduce the N1 stage of sleep—commonly regarded as a light sleep phase—during nocturnal sleep in individuals experiencing difficulty falling asleep. This result highlights the potential for developing non-pharmacological and non-invasive interventions to improve sleep quality. An analysis of factors related to the perception of 0.25 Hz BB revealed that, although the correlation was weak, the ability to perceive 0.25 Hz BB tends to decline with age.
