Dopamine triggers sleep state transitions
Researchers from the University of Tsukuba have found that changes in dopamine in the amygdala, which is a brain region associated with emotion, control the transition between REM and NREM sleep in mice.
Information about the neural mechanisms of the sleep-wake cycle can have important implications for treating individuals with abnormal sleep, as well as those with disorders related to dopamine signaling.
